Tea Tree Oil - Heals Naturally

By Debra Tollefson

When I got the email this week for drug week, which included natural alternatives, I just had to get in on this one. The natural things are what I am interested in the most. My favorites are homemade soaps, healing salves, and breathing treatments with tea tree oil.

I first got interested in natural ingredients when my son was 14 years old and one day in December his body decided it didn't want to breathe. His pediatrition gave him the usual breathing treatment and sent him home with a machine to be used before school, after, and before bedtime. There was the accompanying RX for a pill with steroids. His doctor refused to send him to an allergist so we could find out what he was allergic to so we switched insurance companies. We quit going to that doctor and went to an allergist. The first thing we found out was that the usual spring irritations he had that turned into full blown asthma in December was the fact that he was allergic to our yellow lab. So our beloved lady we had for 11 years had to live with friends who quickly grew to love her until it was time to visit heaven.

Shortly after discovering my sons biggest allergy, this doctor put him on Advair, took him off all pills and the breathing treatments. My son was uncomfortable at first, but within a year he was off the Advair and was breathing fine without any help what so ever.

He did seem to develop GERD during the use of the steroid pills but I am not qualified to judge if the steroids caused it or not.

That is when I began to visit sights on the internet and suddenly got interested in "natural" products. I started with making my own homemade soaps and slowly started making my own changes to easy recipes I found.

One of my new favorite ingredients is tea tree oil. It has a potent aroma but the powers in this essential oil is amazing. I made a batch of homemade soap from a recipe in my favorite melt and pour book that included ground sea weed I purchased from a nearby natural food store. The soap was strong but when I used it to shower in the summer, my aroma didn't attract bees like traditional body washes.

Then, for my 50th birthday I flew to Florida to visit friends. Our visit was close to the anniversary my husband and I were about to celebrate so our friends made us a birthaversary dinner. My friend had lost her mom a few months ago and inherited moms cooking casserole dishes etc.
The dish she cooked sweet potato casserole in cracked in the oven during cooking so when we took it out of the oven it made a mess. We threw the broken dish in a bag and set it aside. After dinner, when we were cleaning, up I happened to brush my foot across the bag and the cracked dish sliced my foot open and cut a nerve. What a mess !!

Well, I had to go in for stitches - 5 of them but I opted for staples (never again) instead. The next day we had to fly home. The following weekend we went the the annual
Renaissance Festival nearby and stopped at a booth that sold essential oils, homemade soaps and skin salves. The lady just happened to be talking about her healing salve with tea tree oil in it and how quickly it heals wounds.
I took some home and put it on my foot and the wound was completely closed in less than two days and I got the staples removed. Not side affects what so ever!!!

My husband works outside so now he uses it on his hands in the winter and his skin no longer splits like it use to - just very mildly once in awhile.

Now I use tea tree oil with eucalyptus leaves in a bowl of hot water and make a tent with a towel and breathe the steam for breathing treatments when I feel slightly congested during weather changes. WHAT A GREAT OIL!!
