Insomnia Creates Daily Troubles
By Deb Tollefson
Insomnia affects everyone, men, women, children, grandparents, , sisters and you name it. Most people you speak to that struggle with it are USUALLY middle-aged or older, for some reason as we age, we have trouble sleeping. I think a larger group with this problem is women going through menopause, whether naturally or because of having a hysterectomy. Your hormones just go through some really difficult changes, kind of like driving down the freeway and shifting your car into reverse. Your body seems confused and doesn't know what to do. Insomnia seems to be the biggest complaint coming from women going through menopause. Because synthetic hormones are so dangerous to consume, I use herbal supplements to help me with my sleep disturbances with the help of my doctor. Men have sleep troubles as they age also as their hormones change too. It is not as talked about simply because a lot of men don't think they go through hormonal changes but they do. My husband admits he struggles with insomnia lately as we are in our fifties and things are definitely changing. We both have sleepless nightes, less energy, and less strength. What we used to do in a day takes a week now. With lack of sleep, you have less concentration and energy during the day. I noticed though that taking the over the counter allergy tablet benadryl puts me to sleep so I take this with no side affects. For some people it makes them figity. The best things I think is to talk to your doctor or for those like me who like herbal stuff, ask at your health food store what works for most people and find what works for your without a lot of side effects. Working with your doctor will eliminate a clash with any blood pressure meds or anything else you take. Bottom line is hang in there, find what works for you and sweet dreams!!!

Thanks Deb. Hormones, huh... Greaaaaaaaaaattttt....
I have been a functional insomniac since December 17, 1979. That's when my eldest child was born. Since resigning from employment in December 2004; I have been sleeping more; however, still average about 4 hours of continuous sleep. I do not take naps and ocassionally, luck up on two sessions of four-hour sleep sessions in a 24-hour period. I use to consume tylenol PMs, prior to resigning from employment to get to sleep; but had to stop taking ALL medications when IBS developed. Now that I do not have structured demanding time-dictating activities, I rest more naturally. My last minor, graduated from high school last year and I am really relaxing ... not getting more sleep; however, more rested
Great intel, Deb. Insomnia affects millions of people worldwide. If I go to sleep before 10pm, I will be tossing and turning most of the night. I will be wide awake by midnight. It's pretty bad at times, because I get up at 5am. Tylenol or a nice hot shower usually works for me.
